Don`t get me wrong, cool wordpress platform or cool 2.0 web creation platform (as I like to call it) is not just for newbie’s…oh noo, it is a hell a lot stronger that you may think.

To be honest, I know couple of web designers which don`t use it at all. On my question why this is this way, they mostly say it is because of lack of designing options.. !! ? A lack of what ? With trillions of cool wordpress templates out there, they are bothered with design ? I don`t know, either I am crazy or they all are.

Yes, it sure is !

I like WordPress. I won’t lie. Is use it constantly on webs I`m building and promoting, either for personal use or just to earn money on them, by selling them or by promoting affiliate links. It`s biggest cool 2.0 web creation advantage is that your site can be up and running in no time. After you get a grip on it, you`ll be able to fully setup and customize whole site in an hour or two.

But to be honest, party just starts. With just a little time and little learning you can do personal blogs to impress someone…maybe your girlfriend, maybe your boyfriend, maybe your friends. Why not to do personal photo blog where you can promote „her” or “him” as a brand. (this is just going if they want to be models, so don`t push it. You can do million of other things. You got the point, wright ?!

And what if you wanna monetize it ? I can`t lie to you…but don`t buy all e-books out there telling you how you will earn tens of billions of dollars under an hour. It is just not like that. First. Learn. Learn as much as you can about blog promotion, about Search Engine optimization, Search Engine Marketing. Learn what link wheels are, what link magnets are, should you or should you not use it at all and why. And this is just a scratch under the hood.

Cool wordpress plugins to have on your blog

I’ve tested some of the following features and others I have only glanced at. So don’t blame me if you try any of these out and they don’t work! Try them at your own risk!

To activate them, you need to unzip them and then place them in your “wp-content/plugins” folder by firing up a FTP program and moving things from your computer to your blog (I preffer SmartFTP). Often, there are written instructions inside the folder you must follow for it to work. Like everything else, this is all trial and error attempts. If it doesn’t work, keep trying around with it until it does work.

Recent Comments – one of the things I like most about WordPress is the ability to highlight recent comments on the front page. It’s only natural for readers to get a kick out of seeing their name on the page and this encourages them to come back and comment again. It’s also good for the blog owner to get a brief overview of any new comments that have come in.

Subscribe to Comments – this is a really cool feature which I have just implemented on my site. It allows people to subscribe to the comments in a post by having them emailed to them. Plus someone can subscribe to the comments without having to leave a comment first. Again, this is a good way to encourage repeat visitors.

Show Related Entries – this is one I have always wanted for my blog. This scans the post you have just read and offers links to similar posts that you have written. This is good for getting visitors to read and comment on your older work that may not be so visible anymore. A good way of recycling something you wrote ages ago.

Askimet – anyone who uses the internet for any lengthy period of time knows full well the spam problem. Bloggers have an even rougher time of it as blogs attract regular visitors and that is fertile hunting ground for the spammers. Askimet is a robust effective spam filtering tool that nukes the spam before it has a chance to hit your blog.

Redirection – this one was recommended to me by Aibek but unfortunately I can’t use it. Basically this plug-in allows you to re-direct posts if the URL changes or if someone types in the website name without the “www” (redirection will add the “www”). But I can’t use it because it needs “.htaccess” and it seems that Yahoo (my hosting company) doesn’t allow it! Which is a pity because this looks like a really great plug-in.

I am currently looking for a good WordPress backup tool. Now I am using cPanel backup but I would like to try  some wp plugins to do the job. If anyone can recommend one, please do let me know in the comments.

WordPress-to-Lead – This has been recently released and I see a ton of value in this. I’ve been using (and still do because I don’t have the need to get leads through my website) a regular contact form through a WordPress plugin. I’m disappointed because often times it gets sent to spam or something I just completely ignore the messages all together. WordPress-to-lead is a plugin that integrates with the Salesforce CRM to create an awesome CRM system. When the customer fills in the form using WTL, it will automatically pull all the customer information and place it into the Salesforce CRM. This is especially useful in eliminating human error when copying and pasting into whatever CRM you may be using. I personally haven’t tried it but I’ve seen it in action. If you aren’t currently using the Salesforce CRM and can’t integrate it, but are curious as to what it does without actually signing up for it, you can see it in a quick video.

Cute Profiles – Cute Profiles adds all your Social Profile icons vertically on left or right side of your pages, which will remain visible all the time though the page is scrolled and without consuming the sidebar space

In next few years there was thousands of new blogs available each day, so wherever you surfed, there was one. But then again, all things come to you, so did IT. Managers came inside the room and said that board of management decided that I need to find a solution which would be used for communicating with customers, which wouldn`t be expensive, and possible or not –it should be finished until – FRIDAY.

So, now is time to include that technology into game. Because this would be a solution for this, it is free, it is simple, and despite that, good enough that it is very popular in US corporate environments.

It is about – WordPress, which is now been released as release 3.0, and it has been around for seven-eight years…
Wordpress has been developed in PHP, and it is using MySQL as a database. Those two, with dedicated server or bought web hosting is the only prerequisite to install and use WordPress as a blogging platform.
Wordpress alone can be downloaded from official WordPress pages, but for most of us, things will get even simpler. If you are using Windows, go to Microsoft Web and search for Microsoft Platform Installer, start it, and inside it check IIS and other MS components, PHP, MySQL & WordPress.
Just like that.

After the installation is complete WordPress is ready to be used. With addition themes, widgets and plugins, which you will need to find yourself (or surf  http://cool-wordpress.com) and read a little about it…

So, first thing you will probably want to change is – wp theme or as people like to express themself – blog design. And whats best, it is very easy to do. Go to Appearance > Themes > Add new > and choose what you would like to do – upload one, search online etc…

After you have find a theme, there is a little bit more place for improvement. Go to Widgets category and choose ones you like and their  position on homepage where you would like them to appear.
Widgets are things like calendar, your links, categories etc…

So, let we take a look at that page… Something is missing ? Yeah, beside posts L… This „something“ is whatever you would like it to be, at least while plugins are around.  Want to have blog like social network site, online shop, video site, photo galleries  or something else, then wordpress plugins are right thing for you.

When this is finished you can start posting blogs and enjoy cool wordpress platform. Posts itself can be published from web admin inteface or by using some clients installed on the computer (like MS Live Writer), but for which there is one more prerequisite – that software needs to support Atom Publishing Protocol or some of supported publishing XML-RPC intefaces (WordPress, Movable Type, MetaWeblog and Blogger). And last but not least – you can even publish posts over e-mail J You can set up one wordpress e-mail which he will follow and when he gets a mail on it, it will publish it. Just be carefull enough to keep that e-mail address away from spammers.
